The first F-16 Block 72 fighter jet for the Royal Moroccan Air Force has successfully completed its inaugural flight, US aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin announced Tuesday, October 6.
The aircraft will now continue flight testing ahead of its delivery, the company said in a statement.
The F-16 Block 72 is the latest and most advanced version of the Fighting Falcon. It features upgraded avionics, next-generation sensors and enhanced mission systems, along with improved safety and reliability, according to Lockheed Martin.
“This first flight represents tangible progress for Morocco’s F-16 Block 72 program and is a key step toward strengthening the Kingdom’s future air power,” said Mike Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group.
He added that the F-16 “remains a critical component of current and future air defense.” According to Shoemaker, the aircraft will continue to support Morocco’s sovereignty and contribute to regional stability for decades to come.
Lockheed Martin noted that its cooperation with Morocco dates back more than 50 years, beginning in 1974 with the delivery of the first C-130H.
The Royal Armed Forces currently operate F-16s, C-130s, advanced radar systems and Black Hawk helicopters. They are also set to receive HIMARS, long-range precision strike systems.
The defense contractor also highlighted its work with Morocco’s industrial sector, particularly through Maintenance Aero Maroc. The company is set to operate a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) center in Benslimane.
The facility will cover more than 8,000 square meters and is designed to handle heavy maintenance and upgrades for C-130 Hercules aircraft. Its expansion to other platforms, including the F-16, is also planned.
According to Lockheed Martin, the investment is part of Morocco’s ambition to become a regional hub for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul.
